No artist other than maybe George Strait and Toby Keith can lay claim to being as consistent with singles as Alan Jackson over the last 20 years. Alan has pretty much had a top hit song every year since 1990. For the last couple years, though, Alan has been floundering on the singles charts. His last two singles have been really good, but they’ve only peaked in the mid-20s on the charts. The songs are great, but there is a reason they haven’t been higher on the charts.
This has happened to Alan a few times in the past and when it has he’s always come back with a classic song he’s often written himself. It’s time for Alan to go back to his roots of making simple songs with catchy hooks and down home stories. Here is what I think the next Alan Jackson single should be.
Her Life’s A Song – Alan Jackson
Her Life’s A Song appears to be about one of AJ’s daughters. That’s what I think anyway. I believe in the past he’s mentioned that his daughter or daughters have had interest in music. I’ll stick with the guess that this track is about his daughter. It’s a great topic for a country song and the melody is as catchy as ever.
Alan Jackson has always had a way with simple lyrics. He even fits in a line about an iPod in her pocket. His daughter is just kicking back and enjoying music. Now that I’m listening, though, there is a line about tipping back a beer in there and another about driving along listening to the radio. Maybe it’s not about his daughter, but it sounds like it’s about any girl or woman out there that loves music.
Alan is certainly a traditional country artist, but he’s always acknowledged the other genres out there. The girl in the song loves hip hop, rock and country all together. I don’t think there is any reason to criticize one genre or another out there today. It’s all the same. You have good music and bad music.
Her Life’s A Song is classic Alan Jackson and that’s the kind of good music country radio could use right now.
What do you think the next single will be for Alan Jackson?
A wild card would be Dixie Road with Zac Brown, which is another AJ written tune.
