Alan Jackson just knows how to find hits.
AJ is prepping to release his new collection 34 Number Ones [+digital booklet]. It’s an amazing record so far and the way AJ is going he’s sure to rack up tons more top hits as he moves into this later years.
The single off the new collection of his will be Ring of Fire– Johnny Cash’s hit song from way back. Alan is bringing in one of his favorite traditional country singers Lee Ann Womack to help him out on the new track.
Alan’s vocals fit perfectly on the track. He gets down low and hits the notes similar to what Cash used to do. Alan puts his own twang on the track, which makes this track different from Johnny’s classic version where there was more grit and attitude.
The rolling guitar is still there and the song is instantly recognizable. It had to be difficult to do this song, but Alan sounds good on just about any classic country track. He recorded an entire album back in ’98 of cover songs for Under The Influence. The songs on that set were top notch and this one would have fit right in.
Lee Ann’s vocals add a nice touch on the background. She’s a talented artist. I always love hearing her on radio. She doesn’t have nearly enough new music out these days.
Overall I think this track will find a strong audience at radio. People love Alan Jackson and with the resurgence he’s had with the duet with the Zac Brown Band there is some buzz around AJ again.
What do you think of the cover?
Is it worthy of Johnny Cash?
