Back in 2000, I watched CMT before leaving for school every morning. I was probably enjoying a bowl of cereal or maybe even a Toaster Strudel. Remember those things? That frosting was the best. Probably not the most nutritious breakfast, but…oh well.
Anyway, there was a new artist back then that was pretty different from everyone else and I loved his music. The song and video were Carlene and the artist was Phil Vassar. It turned out that he had been making quite a name for himself in the late ’90s as a songwriter.
He turned that into a pretty solid singing career throughout the ’00s and he’s still releasing new music including a brand new album.
American Soul – Phil Vassar
This is kind of Phil’s recent ode to the American life. He goes through all kinds of iconic images, people and places in the lyrics on this song. He’s working to get to the root of what America stands for and all that kind of stuff. Nothing political or anything like that. Just working on a few things that many Americans love and live for.
The classic Phil Vassar piano is pretty heavy on this track. And that’s a good thing. That’s always been one of the best things about Phil and the thing that really set him apart from his peers.
Phil will always be one of my favorite artists and he’s still making some really good music. I don’t know how much attention this song and record will get, but they’re good.
What do you think?
