Blake Shelton debuted in 2001 with the song Austin. That song remains one of his biggest hits. He still plays it in concert today. People sing along with just about every word. I remember when Blake first came out. Over the summer of 2001 I was working at a golf course on the maintenance crew. I’d ride around changing the tee marker locations while jamming to the morning country shows.
Blake Shelton was something new at the time. He was a little different. And I remember a song from his second album that, for the most part, went unnoticed. I always kind of liked it, though. It was rocking country before rocking country became popular.

Heavy Lifting – Blake Shelton
Do you remember that one?
It’s good. That’s rocking country music. The song only peaked at #32 on the charts back in early 2003. This was the point in Blake’s career when he’d have a huge #1 smash hit with one single and then sort of flounder around with the next couple. I remember reading interviews from back then and he’d joke about how he couldn’t seem to get two hits in a row.
[easyazon-link asin=”B001QUR9MU”]Heavy Liftin'[/easyazon-link] wasn’t a top ten hit, but for a listening like me the song still mattered. The subject matter is pretty basic. It’s about a hard working guy – a guy willing to do the difficult things in life to make things good for himself…and his girl, of course. That’s real man stuff. This was a song for the guys in the crowd. I’m sure if I’d have been able to see Blake back in the early ’00s this song was a hit in concert.
It’s great to see how far Blake has come in the last decade. He went from the guy that couldn’t get back to back hits to having number one smash songs every time out. I think he’s on a run of about four or five in a row and I don’t think he’ll be missing on many in the future.
Blake is a country superstar. I thought it’d be fun to flashback to the period in his career when he was building up to what he is today.
I hope you enjoy it.
