Do you believe in second chances?
For country artists a second chance is something about as common as back to back number one hits. It just doesn’t seem to happen twice for those that find success the first time. In fact, it seems first chances are difficult to come by even for the most talented artists.
Well a second chance has come along for former Trick Pony member, Keith Burns. He’s teamed up with talented vocalist, Michelle Poe to form the rising country duo Burns & Poe. The group has a new single out and to put it modestly it’s a really good s0ng.
Check it out.
Second Chance – Burns & Poe
Isn’t it catchy?
I love songs like this. Keith’s raspy, deep vocals blend perfectly with Michelle’s almost whispy vocals. The two seem like an unlikely pair. She comes off a bit pop-sounding, but with country undertones while Keith comes across as the traditional hard working country guy. Something about the chemistry works, though, and this single really makes sense to me as a listener.
The new song – Second Chance – is about a girl and a guy. Their relationship has been put on hold for a while. They needed some time away and there seems to be a little misunderstanding. They aren’t sure if they want to stay away or come back together. It turns out they’re both looking for a second chance at love.
What makes this song work well is the male and female dual vocals. You get each part of the story. It’s really cool and the sound is amazing. It’s a country song, but it reminds of pop-rock music from the ’70s where things were toned back just a little to be pop friendly. I’m thinking of bands like The Eagles from that era that became masters of the pop-rock sound. I’d say Burns & Poe have mastered the current sound of pop-rock-country. It’s great and it really takes the showcase on Second Chance.
As mentioned earlier, the Burns half of Burns & Poe is Keith Burns. He was part of the trio Trick Pony back in the early and mid ’00s. That group had a good five year run or so of huge hits on the charts. Trick Pony’s lead singer Heidi Newfield is often remembered for her vocals, but there was a single – [easyazon-link asin=”B001QUUO2M”]Just What I Do[/easyazon-link] – featuring Keith on lead vocals. That song reached the country top 15 and became one of the band’s biggest hits.
Today Keith is back and showing off his vocals center stage with Burns & Poe. The duo is already gaining recognition as one of the best independent acts in country music. It seems with songs like Second Chance they could be ready to break out and hit the mainstream.
And country music would be better off with songs like this on the radio.
