Every once in a while you hear a new song that has a totally unique sound.
That’s the case with We Got Us from newcomer Canaan Smith. That’s Cay-nun Smith. This is the first time I’ve heard of this new guy and I have to say I like what he has to offer the country world with his first single. The song is laid back. It’s cool. It’s got plenty of love and soul and I think it’s got a chance to become a hit. Check it out…
We Got Us – Canaan Smith
We Got Us has this smooth groove. It features the acoustic guitar at the forefront along with Canaan’s voice. The song is about falling in love. It’s two young lovers that have been waiting their entire lives to get away from their hometown. They have nothing to live on. They have nothing to look forward to in terms of jobs or prospects, but they have each other.
When all you have is each other it’s got to be a strange and wonderful feeling. You’ve fallen in love with the person you’re meant to be with the rest of your life. You’re young. You’re looking forward to whatever might happen, but you’re not sure how things are going to work out. You just know you have each other and you know you have the faith to live life and see that things all work out for the best.
Canaan is like the California cool of Colbie Caillat. He’s the mail version of her or maybe he’s a little like the acoustic side of Jesse McCartney. There is a little SoCal in his voice and it’s something that will be new to country fans. I think eventually the country audience will warm to this guy’s sound. The song is smooth and easy to listen to. It’s got a groove that gets you singing along and the sound makes you think, “Who is that now?”.
Canaan could be on to something. The closest two acts right now in country that I’d compare him to are Billy Currington with a little Jake Owen thrown in. Canaan’s voice is smoother than Jake’s and not as gruff and there isn’t as much twang as Billy’s. I think Canaan’s vocals work well for him, though. There could be a future for this guy here in country music.
I think We Got Us has a chance to make the top 20 on the charts. I don’t think it’ll race up the charts. Debut singles rarely do, but I think this track could be on the long path toward the top 20 where by next year at this time it’s just entering its peak.
What for it to happen.
