There are shifts that happen in country music.
In the last few years and really in the last year or two there has been a huge shift toward country with a rocking edge. If you listen to country radio today you’ll hear these artists going crazy up on stage. If you go to the live shows you’ll hear screaming electric guitars, loud drums and plenty of lights and craziness going on.
I like it.
I like it, but I also love me some Alan Jackson, George Strait and Easton Corbin. Even Joe Nichols has been holding the traditional country torch for the last ten years (where is Joe Nichols?).
So country is pretty rocking these days and that’s why I was pleasantly surprised to hear the latest record from Clinton Gregory. His team sent me a copy of Too Much Ain’t Enough and I loved it. You can check out my review. Before hearing this album I admit I really had no idea who Clinton was. It turns out he’s been around for many years and in fact had quite a few top 40, top 50 hits on the country charts back in the early and mid ’90s.
Since that time Clinton has remained busy and after some time he’s back with new music and it’s really something you should check out.
I had a chance to chat with Clinton recently. Here is a recap of our chat.
Let’s get right into the music. How does the song Too Country, the first song on the record, define you as an artist? Why did you lead off this record with that particular song?
I love anything these guys write. It describes the way things are in Nashville and the industry. They tell people that they’re too country and it’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.
My personal favorite era in country music is the early and mid ’90s. As a successful artist of that era how do the 1990s differ from the country music of today and are there any artists, other than you, keeping the traditional country sound alive?
It goes in cycles and right now things are a little different. I still like the music coming out now. Everybody does their thing and that’s great. For me it’s always been about the traditional country sounds and I’m glad there are still people out there that love to hear it. There are a few of us still out there and I think the traditional sound will come back around again. It always does.
What is daily life like now for you versus what it was like back during your first run?
Not a whole lot has changed. You go through life and divorce and things like that. Life happens, things change, but for me it’s always been about the music. Music is still the topic of the day. Lots of touring these days. She Did is the new single. It’s a story song. The video will be out soon.
What excites you about the future? Talk about your career, your life and what you’re looking forward to with music and everything else.
Some really amazing things are happening right now including the song She Did. You can put out something that’s just a country story song and people act like it’s something brand new and that’s good. To me it’s a great country song and to hear people react to it and say they love is just the best thing in the world.
A few quick questions to end things. First, your favorite song on the new album?
They’re all good and my favorites in different ways. We didn’t put anything on there that we didn’t believe in.
Favorite male artist of all time?
Favorite female artist of all time?
Favorite band of all time?
Bluegrass Album Band. A bunch of great musicians getting together.
Final question: What can country fans expect when they pick up the new album Too Much Ain’t Enough?
It’s country music, traditional country music. Different humor and some serious things. It’s a little something for everybody.
