Colt Ford is perhaps the most interesting person in country music right now.
Earlier this year is when I really started looking into Colt and his music. I saw and interview on The Golf Channel of all places where Colt called in and chatted with his old buddy and now Golf Channel correspondant, Charlie Rymer. The two old buddies chatted about their days on the semi-pro golf tours. It turns out, Colt is a pretty good player and came close to playing on the professional tour.
After spending most of his life playing golf, Colt gave it up for a new pursuit – music. The story goes, Colt called up Charlie one day and said he wanted to do something different. He was going to blend the music kids were listening to in the South. Colt was talking about the music kids were playing when they were hanging out in the parking lot of the schools.
The music was rap and country.
Charlie thought Colt was crazy, but I’m sure he supported his buddy. Since that time Colt has been busy and he’s slowly been building his career and now he’s actually becoming one of the biggest things in music.
As we head into 2012, Colt is looking to keep the momentum going. He’s coming off his biggest album up to this point. He’s probably got some new music on the horizon and one thing Colt seems to really want is that first legitimate country hit on the radio.
Colt Ford in 2012
As we head into 2012 I’m thinking Colt is just going to get bigger. He’s successfully blended country and rap. He’s sold hundreds of thousands of records and tickets over the last four years and now he’s just working on getting bigger and bigger.
On tap for the new year should be some new singles, videos, and perhaps even a new album. I’m also thinking Colt has a great shot at winning the Grammy he was nominated for. He was robbed, in my opinion, at the recent country award shows and I think he’ll be redeemed at the Grammy’s.
Here’s a closer look at the new year for Colt Ford.
Last spring, Colt released Every Chance I Get. The album debuted at at #3 on the country charts and in the top 30 on the Billboard 200. It was Colt’s biggest album to date and seems to still be selling well as he tours the country in support. The record saw the first single crack the top 60 on the charts, but subsequent singles have missed the mark as far as making the charts. The songs on the album are great, but country radio is dragging their feet when it comes to accepting Colt.
If things go as planned I’d say we might get new music from Colt sometime in the summer. He’s out on tour right now through the winter. I’m not sure if he’s got some tracks ready to record, but I think there will be a new collection in 2012.
A new album in 2012 would keep Colt right on track with his formula for success. He’s released an album just about a year apart the last two years. Both albums have been huge successes and Colt has really come into his own. And I think that after Colt wins the Grammy he’ll be even more well known and prepared to take advantage with a new album.
The album will probably have more of the same rap-country. Colt has been bringing in his buddies from country, rap, and rock to sing the chorus parts on most songs. It’s a formula that’s worked in pop music and it’s really a great method for Colt as well.
Colt just released a new video for What I Call Home. The song is from his last album. I’m not sure if this will become an official single. Colt seems to prefer to just forgo radio and release songs on YouTube and other online channels. That’s where his young audience is and that’s what he focuses on. If radio won’t pay attention then that’s their problem.
Colt did have success with Dirt Road Anthem as a performer and a writer. Maybe country’s is coming around. Maybe if Colt can get something really great ready for a new album it could become his first legitimate top 40 country hit. Just maybe. I’m hoping he’s able to do it.
Colt has been out hitting a few clubs this winter. He was recently in Mississippi playing a club show and the paper in the area wrote a great article. It discussed how Colt has been one of the best selling artists in the area for the last few years.
Colt just keeps making the rounds on his tours. The shows are probably getting bigger and bigger each year. It’s a way for him to show the fans that’s he’s the real deal with his blend of country and rap. He puts on a show and gives a great performance. That’s what matters to the real country fans out there. Colt has sold nearly one million tickets at this point and things just keep getting bigger heading into 2012.
Perhaps the biggest news recently was Colt’s nomination for Best Country Solo Performance for Dirt Road Anthem at the Grammy Awards. The song has been nominated for various awards lately and really hasn’t won any of them. I thought it was the best single and song of 2011 and Colt, Brantley Gilbert, and Jason Aldean all deserve credit for creating a great track.
I’m pulling for them at the Grammy’s.
It’s hard to focus on 2013 at this point, but I think Colt Ford is going to be around for a while. He seems to have fallen into a good groove of releasing new music, hitting the road, and even having a few country artists record his songs. I’m thinking we’ll see Colt slowly build his career, probably get a few legitimate country hits and perhaps finally gain the respect he deserves.
A few years ago Colt gave up one dream and worked really hard to make another reality. When more than a few people thought he was nuts he was able to blend country and rap and now he’s reaping the rewards.
Way to go, Colt and keep on rolling.
