Now here’s an interesting story.
The other day I heard Twenty One by Corey Smith on AOL New Country First. I listened to the song and thought it was good. I kept on working and the song came on again some time later in the day. This time I looked closer at the name.
Where had I heard that name before…
Then I remembered I’d read about Corey Smith – the independent music artist grossing millions by giving away his music for free…well kind of free. Corey Smith has been an independent artist for something around a decade. His business model has been to make music people want to listen to first and foremost it seems. That’s an important step.
Beyond that he found it a struggle to get signed to a big label. So Corey released his songs for free on his site at least for a period of time. He still sells his music on the usual suspect sites like Amazon. The result? Corey’s fanbase grew and grew and soon he was making a seemingly damn good living off touring and merchandise.
Now it seems Corey is looking for a little more success and aren’t we all. It looks like Corey is going to release a single and new album with the Average Joe’s label. It seems they’re officially releasing Twenty One as a single. The song has been around, but I’m sure there are others out there that haven’t heard it before just like me.
Twenty One is a great song especially for the guys in the country audience and probably the girls too. I remember when I was 21. It was a good time of college, girls, and plenty of good times. When you’re 21 you’re kind of at the point where you aren’t worried too much about tomorrow. You’re only thinking about tonight and how to get the pretty girl to pay attention to you at the party.
I think it’s alright to look back at those days once and a while in between the good life of being mature. Corey Smith seems to feel the same especially when he sees the pretty 21 year olds walking around.
Welcome to country radio Corey Smith. Happy to have you.
