It’s a weird thing in country music, but most artists struggle with label changes.
Then you have an artists like Craig Morgan. The man seems to get better each time a record label change occurs. First there was the initial phase of Craig’s career when he really struggled to find a hit. Then he found huge success the second time around with a new label. After moving on from that relationship things continued to be strong.
Now Craig is at his fourth label and the first single is already a huge hit and still climbing.
It seems like nothing can stop this man on his drive for success. The songs on the new album – This Ole Boy – are great. There is something here for all of Craig’s previous fans and even a few tracks that might find the ears and interest of new fans.
You won’t want to miss a single second of This Ole Boy.
Craig Morgan – This Ole Boy Album Review
Craig has always had this twang that separated him from a few of the other mainstream guys in country. There was something sweet and wholesome about his lyrics and music. The songs are generally safe and fun to sing. There is definitely an understanding of what family music should be and that’s what Craig has always included on each of his records. This is one the entire family can listen to even if there are a few that will go right over the kids’ heads.
It’s a great album full of great songs with many more besides the title track that could become big hits.
1. This Ole Boy
I’ve loved this track since it first came out. The single is great. It’s incredibly catchy. Craig is at his best with this kind of simple country romantic song. These types of songs are really popular on radio right now and it’s no wonder this one is already nearing the top 20. I think it could become another top ten for Craig and the first for his new label partner.
2. More Trucks Than Cars
I’m from a town where this is a true phrase. I’m not from the south, but if you have been to Wisconsin you know you need a good truck especially in the wintertime. There ain’t know way you’re driving that sports car in the snow. I’m not sure if this one will be the second single from this record, but it certainly would have to do well at radio. Great song and one of my favorites on the entire collection.
3. Whole World Needs a Kitchen
Sometimes we all need a little more time with each other. No better place than a country kitchen for that.
4. Country Boys Like Me
There’s a cool slide guitar intro on this song. That’s what instantly grabs me. Craig really hasn’t changed anything with this album. He’s still singing about the stuff he’s always been singing about. He’s true to who he is and gives his fans what they want. I think this is actually one of Craig’s best collections yet. The man surprises with each album and is really getting better with each song. That doesn’t usually happen.
5. Show Me Your Tattoo
This song is a little racy. The lyrics are suggestive and even the music is a little naughty feeling. There are some crazy things going on in this song, but man I guess that’s part of country music too. You gotta like this one. You know what I’m talking about guys?
6. Love Love’s a Long Night
Here’s a good track. The groove is back for the romantic side of things with this one. It’s an easy going song and another one that could be a single this summer. It’ll be interesting to see what song is released second because they’re all really good.
7. Being Alive and Livin’
Craig’s fans really know that he loves to live life. He’s always going fast and acting like he has something to prove before he’s gone. That is what this song is about. Get out there and live life. What else is the point? Enjoy it while you can.
8. Fish Weren’t Bitin’
A good old boy song once again. These guys know how to win over the women with the southern charm. I like this one.
9. Better Stories
Here’s another song about those crazy friends you have. Or maybe you’re the crazy friend with all the crazy stories. It’s good to hear the stories from time to time, but man you can get in trouble making them.
10. I Didn’t Drink
Slowing down a lot here for this song. This is one that really hits you in the heart. Great track. One of Craig’s best.
11. Corn Star
Here’s the one song on here that is not really romantic and not really for the family. I suppose you can get away with one or two songs that might have something that goes over the kids’ heads. The song is all in good fun and I’m sure it will gain some added attention for Craig as he looks to continue to be one of the biggest stars in country.
12. Summer Moon
I love country songs with this groove. The speed of this song is romantic, but it’s not too slow. The pacing is good. Craig’s voice is strong. I feel like he’s one of the best on these romantic songs. There is nobody better when it comes to the southern charm. This one makes you feel like grabbing your baby and dancing under the moonlight this evening. Nothing better.
