You never saw this coming.
New country and bluegrass duo Dana and Lauren have taken a hip hop classic and turned it into a bluegrass tune. Rap fans might be agonized by the sound (or some might think it’s cool), but at the end of the day the girls did a great job on the song.
And sometimes you need to do something crazy to breakout in this business.

California Love – Dana and Lauren
I’m not sure if Dr. Dre has heard this and I’m not sure what Tupac would think of his rap being turned into a bluegrass song, but no matter what they think their music is reaching new audiences.
I hadn’t heard of Dana and Lauren before this morning when I caught word of the video. I have to give these girls credit. It takes some bravery to take on this song and to turn it into something entirely different from the version people are used to. Even for the bluegrass crowd it has to come as a pretty big shock even if they’ve never heard the original.
From a country and bluegrass perspective I think the song is cool. Bluegrass folks know how to party and there are plenty of country folks in California. I’m not sure if they’re in Compton or Watts, but you never know.
What this song will probably get remembered for is the unique approach Dana and Lauren took to launching their career. It’s a great way to get attention and the best part is these girls appear to have the talent to back up the attention they should receive.
People might laugh this off as a stunt, but once they hear the voices and the sound of the instruments they’ll realize this pair of pickers has some talent. And as they continue releasing new music people will recognize the sound and the career for Dana and Lauren could really take off.
Looking back on their past videos it turns the duo did a version of Photograph by Def Leppard with the band Malibu Storm…awesome.
I’m a fan.
