Sometimes you ain’t got nothin’.
That’s how Darius Rucker feels in his latest single. The song is off the Charleston, SC 1966 album. So far the set has seen both of the first two singles reach number one on the charts. Darius is looking for number three with the release of the latest track.

I Got Nothin’ – Darius Rucker
If you’ve been following Darius since his country debut in 2008 you know he doesn’t get into the sad side of life very much. What is there to be sad about really? Darius would seem to have a pretty happy life so why sing about the bad things?
Well for I Got Nothin’ Darius must have pulled from something in the memory bank because there is some sad emotion coming out. The song is about a guy whose woman is leaving him. He knows the time was coming. He knows whey she’s leaving. He wonders if there is anything he could say to make her stay.
As he thinks about it, though, he realizes he’s got nothing to say that will make her change to mind.
And that’s how it works sometimes.
When things are going well in relationship people will leave. After a while we realize things aren’t the best for us and we move on. That’s what the woman in the song has decided and it goes way deeper than anything a man could say to make her stay.
Here’s what I had to say about the song back in October for the Review of Charleston, SC 1966:
This is the breakup song on the album. The narrator is realizing he’s got nothing to say even though his woman is leaving him. He covers the emotions some feel when there is nothing left to say when you both know it’s over. Even if there is still some feeling that you want to be with them you both kind of no there is nothing you can do. Maybe it’s best to actually have nothing to say.
It’s kind of a nice change of pace for Darius. Not that the sad songs are always good, but us country fans like a bit of sadness once in a while. We aren’t always happy go lucky and when we’re down on our luck it’s nice to turn on the radio and know we aren’t the only sad people in the world.
Good job Darius. Keep the hits coming.
