This is why I love Flashback Friday.
Looking back on the great country songs gives me this good feeling. Each song I feature in this column gives me some kind of memory. It reminds me of exactly where I was when I was listening to the songs.
And that’s the poer of country music. One song can define a moment in your life and forever you’ll have that link, that trigger to take you back to the moments in life that define you.
This week we look back at Deana Carter and her hit from 1997.

We Danced Anyway – Deana Carter
Ok you got me. The song was actually released in December of 1996, but I’m going to say 1997 because that’s when I really remember this song.
For me the song came out just at the time I was really getting into country music. I spent a lot of time on the school bus back then. It was something like two hours each day riding the bus and the only music the driver would play was country. I specifically remember when [easyazon-link asin=”B000SZBWRM”]We Danced Anyway[/easyazon-link] would come on the radio because I couldn’t help but mouth along with the words while trying to remain out of sight of the other kids.
The song is just so catchy. It’s not that I was the intended target audience, but I think this track had a way of connecting with everyone – male or female, young and old. The song is just good country music. It has a great melody and a great message.
[easyazon-link asin=”B000SZBWRM”]We Danced Anyway[/easyazon-link] is about letting go of care. It doesn’t matter what everyone else things of you or what you do. Live your life and enjoy everything. Enjoy the moments you have with the ones you love most. Spend time with family and friends and do what makes you happy. Fall in love and dance in the street even if you don’t know the words to the song.
That is what life is about and for me this is one of the greatest country songs of all time.
