There may have been a few angels talking to Dierks Bentley when he decided to throwdown a bluegrass album. Up on the Ridge has been a moderate success on the sales charts. After two platinum albums and another gold album the country star went bluegrass and while the sales haven’t bee huge there has been great critical acclaim including three recent Grammy nominations.
A song that made the nominations for Dierks was Bad Angel – one of the great songs on the collection. The melody is catchy. It caught me the first time I listened to the album all the way through. It’s got character and sounds like nothing left else on the country charts.
For Bad Angel Dierks called in buddies Miranda Lambert and Jamey Johnson to help him out. Dierks sings the first verse in the song, which is about trying to quit smoking despite the bad angel on the shoulder telling you that just one smoke will make things better in the short term. In the second verse Miranda sings about alcohol addiction. In the third there is country bad boy Jamey Johnson singing about gambling.
Bad Angel is a great song. I love the visual of a Bad Angel to start and the music behind the story of temptation and addiction makes it a worthy song of winning awards.
This is a song I think the country world could really connect with and love. Could it be a single that brings Up on the Ridge to the mainstream?
