Kacey Musgraves is releasing a new Christmas album soon and we’ll be sure to pick a song from there to include here on CML, but I realized that earlier this year I made the mistake of not adding Kacey’s last single here on CML.
So we’re going to take a step back and look at this really good song. Every couple weeks I find myself coming back to Kacey’s sophomore album to listen to the entire thing. It’s really one of the best albums released in country music in recent years.
It’s honest. It’s real life. It’s real country.
Dime Store Cowgirl – Kacey Musgraves
I’m not really sure why Kacey’s songs haven’t had more success with radio. Maybe they’re too country? I don’t really get it. This one is catchy and it kind of reminds me of the Dixie Chicks in a way and I’m a big fan of the Dixie Chicks.
The song here is about a woman that’s kind of finding her way through life. It seems very autobiographical about the ride that Kacey took to the top of country music with her first album. Now she’s kind of looking back at her roots and realizing who she is and how she’s going to go forward with life. It’s a very good theme for a song and it’s all wrapped up a really good melody.
This one didn’t really do much at country radio and that’s too bad. I know a bunch of people bough the album. Maybe not as much as the first, but it did well all things considered. I’m excited for the Christmas record. I’m a big fan of Kacey’s.
