Every once in a while I need to check in on CMT Edge to see what’s really going on in country music. Anybody can get the latest news on the popular stars and all the Bro Country stuff going on, but there is some really good music happening on the edge too. I love that blog.
This time I discovered a song from Shooter Jennings. He’s still out there active in the music industry. He’s not played on country radio, but he still has tons of fans and they seem to be loving this song.
Check it out.
Don’t Wait Up (I’m Playin’ Possum) – Shooter Jennings
From the opening sounds of this track you know that it’s a Shooter Jennings song. He has a unique voice and his style with the music is different too. I like it his style and I know that others do as well. There is a lot of hard rock in there, but there is also plenty of country.
In fact, this might be more country than a lot of country coming out today. It reminds me a little bit of Steve Earle. Shooter kind of has that sound, but he’s entirely his own artist.
The song is a little bit of a tribute or a tip of the hat to the late George Jones. It’s about doing what guys like Shooter do whether they’re out working or out having a good time enjoying life. But there are some other lyrics in there that make you think that the song is about much more than you might gather on the first listen.
Don’t wait up for them, but give it a few listens and see if you can figure it out.
