Billy Currington is an interesting case study in country music. He’s been having hits now in country music for something like 12 years or so. That’s a long time in this business, but Billy is still kind of in that weird zone of star and superstar.
Here is the second single off his new record.
Drinkin’ Town With A Football Problem – Billy Currington
I think it’s a great line for a country song. You have football right in there, which most people love whether it’s high school, college or the pros. Just about everybody loves football in this country.
And you have drinking, which for better or worse, is also a part of our makeup in this country.
I guess you could call either one a problem depending on how you look at it. Get a little too emotionally involved and you start affecting yourself and those around you.
I think that’s what the song is about, but it takes a pretty light hearted look at it. I think it’ll get people thinking about how they appreciate their small town lives.
And Billy is a great one to deliver the message.
I think Don’t It was his tenth number one hit and that is pretty crazy. The list is short of country singers that have achieved that, but I also read recently where Billy was looking forward to touring with Tim McGraw, which great to say, but it kind of came off like Billy still saw himself as a young gun in this business.
Ten number ones and twelve years of hits would lead most into superstar status, but that has never really happened for Billy. He’s certainly a star and a great singer, but it’s a bit peculiar.
Anyway, that’s little stuff because fans are going to keep loving what he’s putting out.
