It’s official – Eric Church is big time now.
Earlier this week Eric notched not only his first number one country album, but number one album on the Billboard 200. That’s right – number one album in the entire country went to Eric Church.
Eric’s third album – [easyazon-link asin=”B005C0WM4K”]Chief[/easyazon-link] – became the second highest selling country album of the year selling 145,000 copies in the first week or release (Brad Paisley was #1 earlier with [easyazon-link asin=”B004FZOE4E”]This Is Country Music[/easyazon-link] at 153,000). Considering where Eric Church was just a few years ago it’s really impressive to see him with the top album on the Billboard 200.
I mean, that’s the kind of stuff Garth Brooks did back in the early ’90s.
Eric has gone from being a new artist kicked off a Rascal Flatts’ tour to becoming one of country’s superstars.
Yes…Eric Church is a superstar.
Eric Church – Country Superstar 2011
Back at the beginning of the year I wrote about what 2011 might look like for 2011. I thought he’d be finishing out the year with another single from [easyazon-link asin=”B001UXVH12″]Carolina[/easyazon-link]. I was wrong on that one. He moved right on to the first single from a new album and it proved to be the right move for Eric and his career.
Here is what I wrote back in Eric Church 2011:
It’s easy to think 2011 may be just another slower than average year for Eric Church, but that’s how he’s been building things throughout his entire career. Before most people realized it Eric had built up a solid collection of hits. 2011 looks to be a year of more hits, bigger shows, and perhaps even a new single by the end of the year that could kick things up to the next level for the country star.
And last summer Billboard ran an article on Eric and Joe Nichols. Even at that time it seemed like the two stars would turn into headliners in no time. With the way things are going that could be true next summer for Eric. Here is what I wrote about Eric Church being a Headliner:
As his career continues to build momentum, look for Eric Church to emerge as one of the touring headliners in country music. He’s heading out on tour with a fellow rising star Miranda Lambert this fall. She’s on a much faster track to headlining status, but as his history proves, Eric Church will do what it takes – even if it takes a little longer – to get there his own way.
Eric is proving he’s got what it takes. [easyazon-link asin=”B005C0WM4K”]Chief[/easyazon-link] is at the top of the world right now and so is Eric. I think he’s got what it takes to make this thing go to the next level. Like Miranda Lambert before him, I think Eric will go from struggling on the edge of the top ten with singles to having regular top three hits including a few number ones.
Eric Finds Success On His Own Terms
There was another article on Billboard this week. The magazine and chart provider talked to Eric and asked him for his thoughts on the achievement. Eric seemed to be himself with the answers and said his faith was restored in the fact that it’s really all about the music after all.
“People were looking at Kelly Rowland’s numbers,” Church says. “All of a sudden, we blow by everybody and people are asking, ‘Who the hell is Eric Church, and how did he sell this many records without No. 1 songs?’ I don’t tweet. I’m not a Facebook guy. I don’t do any of those things. To have this kind of success the first week, it’s about the music. It’s really restoring my faith.”
It’s also nice to see that Eric will be a headliner next year in 2012.
Church is touring with Toby Keith through October. Then he’ll come home to await the birth of his first child, a boy. After the first of the year, he’ll embark on his first tour as a headliner.
Eric is at the top of the world right now. He seems grounded, though. Nothing seems to get to this guy. He does things his way. He keeps himself grounded with family and friends. He focuses on the music and lets the fans handle all the other BS surrounding the music biz. He gives them music they love and they spread the word.
I’m looking for Eric’s next singles to do a little better as well. He’s a superstar now. More people are going to become Eric Church fans.
