You could call Gary Allan different, Devil’s Advocate, instigator and many other things.
Or you could just call him a true artist.
Gary has never done things how they should be done. He doesn’t listen to what others have to say especially when it comes to his image and his music. He does what he feels is right and in some cases does exactly the opposite of what people tell him just to prove them wrong.
It’s hard to believe it’s been over 15 years since Gary Allan released his first album back in 1996. In many ways he’s changed over the years with his music, but in other ways he’s remained true to who he is.
The songs are about love and life. The gravel voice is as strong and unique as ever. There is nobody quite like Gary Allan in country music and that’s probably why he’s still one of the most popular artists after all this time.
With all this behind him he moves forward with his new album Set You Free.
Album Review: Set You Free – Gary Allan
The album has an interesting flow. You go from a tough goodbye to good as new. It’s almost like a person is going through a breakup and coming out on the other end better than they were.
There are some interesting sounds on the record including a few really catchy songs that scream to be singles. But with Gary you never know what to expect from the singles. He might put out a song that nobody would put on radio just because he can.
So we’ll see what he does with this record.
1. Tough Goodbye
Gary has mentioned in a few interviews leading up to the album that this is one of his favorite songs on the record. He feels it could be a single and after listening to it you’ll probably agree. It’s an upbeat song about a breakup. Good melody on this one.
2. Every Storm (Runs Out Of Rain)
By now everyone recognizes this huge hit. It’s been a smash on the radio and in digital downloads. Gary had been off the top ten on the charts for five years until this one made its way up the charts. Great comeback song that covered how a person can come out on the top even after a big storm in life.
Gary really gets into this song. The gravel in the voice comes out strong. It’s powerful. He’s out for revenge with this song.
4. It Ain’t The Whiskey
This song starts out really interesting. You feel like you’re sitting in church listening to the organ as people start walking in. It’s an interesting song. It’s about all the things in life that can make you feel sad. It’s not the whiskey.
5. Sand In My Soul
This is an interesting song. It starts out with an eery sound and then kind of glides along. It’s cool.
6. You Without Me
This one is a sad song. There is a longing in the lyric and in the vocal.
7. One More Time
We go through a lot in life and even with all the times we get knocked down we get back up just one more time. We want more chance to make things right. Just one more chance.
8. Hungover Heart
This is a pretty low song. It’s the type of song you’ve heard from Gary before. It’s about how good love can be, but when it doesn’t work out you’re left with a hangover the next day.
9. No Worries
For some reason country artists love the Caribbean sound. I’m not sure if we should blame Kenny Chesney or go all the way back to Jimmy Buffett. This is Gary’s island song on the set.
There are a few funky songs on the album and this is one of them. It almost sounds like a lounge song. Really interesting choice, but there are some people that will love it.
This is my favorite song on the album. The hooks are just so catchy. I’ve been listening to this one more than any of the others. It starts out laid back, but turns up as it goes. We’re all made of different pieces from different sources. Neat idea for a song.
12. Good As New
This song starts out with a somber sound, but by the end you feel like you’re being let go of a past life. It’s an uplifting song in an unusual way. Great way to end an album. It leaves you wanting more. The really neat thing is the images in the song are new and fresh. That’s another trait Gary seems to have. He can find a good song.
