George Strait has been racking up hits for over 30 years now. He’s covered all the topics you can imagine and done it better than most for much of his career. One thing George hasn’t done is to cover a song inspired by a line from a Will Smith movie…until now.
The third single from George’s album Twangis The Breath You Take. The song is a beautiful ballad about the relationship of a father and son as they go through life living for the moments that take their breath away.
The first time I heard the song I liked it and figured it would be another hit for George. After I heard the song again I realized the hook sounded familiar. I heard it a third time and realized it was from the Will Smith Movie Hitch. In the opening sequence of the movie Will Smith’s character Hitch is describing the art of a woman and man falling in love with each other. At the end of the sequence Hitch says:
But always remember… life is not the amount of breaths you take. It’s the moments that take your breath away.
It’s a great line. Check out the clip. Skip ahead to about 6:10 and you’ll see it…
The Moments That Take Your Breath Away – Will Smith
I don’t think the fact that it was inspired by a line in a movie takes anything away from the song. There are plenty of great songs that have been inspired by lines in movies. Lots of songs are written specifically for scenes in movies and for soundtracks. One of George Strait’s past hits was inspired by a line from the movie Forrest Gump. See Blue Clear Skyand Forrest Gump Country Music.
The Breath You Takeis another great song George Strait has added to his collection. The tune is quickly climbing the charts and appears headed for the top five after a few more weeks. George has always been the best at picking hits after listening to only demos.
Fans love what George is doing and if that means singing a song inspired by a Will Smith movie line then I think that’s alright.
What do you think of The Breath You Take? It is a hit?
