Good Country Songs Part 5
10) Summertime Blues – Alan Jackson
Alan Jackson knows how to have a bit of fun in the summertime. He released the classic Summertime Blues and the song became a summer classic about enjoying life in the sun each summer. Alan covered the classic Eddie Cochran song and added his own classic twang and traditional sound. This song is the anthem for those that just want to get off work in the summertime and head out to enjoy life on the lake, on the town, or even in the backyard at home with friends. There is so much more to life than work especially during the hot summer months where enjoying a cool beverage is much better than working inside in a factory or an office.
9) Something Like That – Tim McGraw
Over the summer of 1999 Tim McGraw saw his single Something Like That dominate the charts as a fan favorite tune. Most country fans know the lyric from the song barbecue stain on my white t-shirt. It’s classic country summer right there. It’s a great image about the little things that can happen when you’re just a guy trying to get the attention of a pretty girl. The song was a big hit for Tim and continued his rise to legendary country star status. Tim dominated the late ’90s and ’00s in country and he doesn’t seem to be slowing down. He’s had many good country songs and Something Like That remains a fan favorite.
8) Don’t Happen Twice – Kenny Chesney
Tim’s buddy Kenny Chesney hadn’t quite reached his superstar status when he released the good country song Don’t Happen Twice in 2001. The song became another #1 hit for Chesney and marked the first stage of his career as the biggest single from his first greatest hits set. The song sees Kenny looking back on the good times of being a young guy experiencing the fun things in life like sharing a bottle of wine with a pretty girl and sipping from Dixie cups. The song is great, unique and one of the best country songs of all time. The tune marked the end of Kenny’s early career as his next album really shot him to another level as a country rock star.
7) The Shake – Neal McCoy
Neal McCoy was one of the biggest stars of the ’90s in country music. He had hit after hit for a few years and even won Entertainer of the Year in 1998. In 1997 Neal had a top five hit with the song The Shake. The song is an ode to all the women out there that know how to shake their bodies in ways that drive men wild. There is just something about a beautiful woman sharing her body that makes all men go crazy and do foolish things. Neal is still going strong today out on the road. He has a string of popular places he plays and The Shake is still one of his biggest hits when he play it for the fans. There are plenty of shakers in the stands when the tune comes on. A great country song.
6) Dust On The Bottle – David Lee Murphy
In 1995 David Lee Murphy released the number one song Dust On The Bottle. The tune is a classic country foot stomping track that gets your blood pumping. The track is kind of rock and a lot of country. The song is about a guy that’s taking out a gal on a date and he gets a little special wine to make the night special. David Lee Murphy is one of country’s best songwriters. This song is all unique and catchy as hell. Since his days as a star performer he’s been making a good living writing songs for other stars like Jason Aldean and Kenny Chesney. Not a bad gig for a guy that still gets recognized for the huge hit he had 15 years ago with Dust On The Bottle.
5) Meet In The Middle – Diamond Rio
Country fans most certainly recognize Meet In The Middle when it comes on the radio. The debut song for Diamond Rio was released in 1991 and it remains such a big hit even today. The song has a great guitar riff, a great vocal, and a so many hooks and melodies it’s impossible not to like this song. The tune is about a guy and a gal meeting in the middle on various issues in their life and always working it out with compromise. The song is one of those classic tunes just about everybody knows and sings along with when they hear it. It’s a great country song with staying power and that’s why it belongs on everybody’s good country song playlist.
4) Hillbilly Bone – Blake Shelton and Trace Adkins
Blake Shelton and Trace Adkins got together in 2008 and 2009 for one rocking hillbilly anthem. The song was Hillbilly Bone and it told the story of a guy from the city that realizes he’s got a little hillbilly in him. The song is pure country fun and there was no two better people to put together for this track than Blake and Trace. Shelton has one of the most…let’s call it unique personalities in country music. He’s a joker that isn’t shy about hiding his humor. Trace is a softy with a big voice that loves singing crazy songs (see: Honky Tonk Badonkadonk). The song shot to the top of the charts and became just a good old country tune. It should be a fan favorite for many years. When two great country stars get together and have fun on a track this is what happens.
3) What’s It To You – Clay Walker
A career in country music can’t get off to a much better start than with a debut single going all the way to #1 on the charts. That’s exactly what happened in 1993 for artist Clay Walker. Now, it takes quite a bit of talent, hard work, and luck just to break out as a new artist. It’s difficult to gain attention when nobody’s every heard of you so for a debut song to go #1 you can imagine the song has to be a great one. What’s It To You was the song that did it for Clay Walker. The tune is super catchy. The melody of the music is infectious and has you tapping your feet and singing along from the first note. It’s a simple love song with a great unique sound that remains popular today making it one of the best country songs of all time.
2) Life’s A Dance – John Michael Montgomery
In late 1992, a guy with a big hat and the biggest dimples in country music history released his debut single Life’s a Dance. John Michael Montgomery burst onto the scene with the uptempo song about life and loving a good woman. The song may have been a shameless play off the classic Garth Brooks song but Life’s a Dance is stands strong on its own as a great country song. The tune is full of fun, catchy lyrics and melodies that gets the whole crowd smiling. Nearly twenty years after it was first released the song is still popular among new country fans and I’m sure this one will remain a hit for many more years.
1) Vidalia – Sammy Kershaw
It doesn’t get any better than Vidalia from Sammy Kershaw. The song is clever, fun, and well executed by one of country’s greatest voices. Sammy had a great run of hits in the ’90s and while he struggled a bit off the stage he always proves himself to be one of the best with a microphone. Vidalia is about a girl that makes poor Sammy cry like those old Vidalia onions. The song has passed generations of country fans now and it still remains just as popular as when it was first released. The song is just so damn catchy you can’t help but smile and sing along when it’s playing. This is truly the top song of the good country song list. A true classic.
