Sturgill Simpson is an interesting person in country music. He’s been making headlines for a few years because his albums have been selling so well. That always gets people’s attention and it especially does if your sound and style are outside the norm.
It’s hard to define Sturgill’s sound and style. I think when I previously looked at his music it reminded me of traditional country. But he has a new song out that while still traditional country sounding definitely has some other elements.
In Bloom – Sturgill Simpson
I first saw the title of this single and it struck me as interesting and then as familiar. After the first five seconds I recognized it as one of the big hits from the rock band Nirvana.
That makes it a really interesting cover choice for Sturgill. There has to be a reason behind this song or maybe he just likes it. I don’t know for sure.
I believe that when Kurt Cobain wrote the song he was feeling like fans and people in the music business didn’t really understand his music or what he was trying to say. That’s kind of what the lyrics are about, but as with most things about Kurt the lyrics are vague and sometimes they don’t really make any sense.
Maybe Sturgill feels that people don’t really understand his music? Or maybe it’s just a song he liked from his younger days.
I think he does a great job with kind of changing this one up and making it his own. If you’ve never heard of Nirvana and are a Sturgill fan I think you would find this one to fit right into his style.
What do you think?
