Saturday night is going to be good at Country Jam this summer.
Most fans will be getting ready for the headliner show where Zac Brown and his band will liven up the stage with their intense live show. There is even the tickle of a few special guests. It should be interesting to see what those guys can bring to the rowdy bunch of Wisconsin country fans.
Before ZBB hits the stage though there is plenty to look forward to including newcomer David Nail.
Let’s check out what you can expect from David at this year’s Country Jam in Eau Claire.
Country Jam 2011: David Nail
At 3:15pm on Sunday July 23rd, David Nail will hit the stage at Country Jam in Eau Claire, WI. It’ll be David’s first time on the stage in Eau Claire and my hunch is there will be plenty of fans waiting for him.
Typically by Saturday at Jam the fans – especially the campers – are a little late getting to the shows. There are a couple early shows happening on Saturday and I expect the fans to slowly make their way out to the grounds. It’s usually a bit restless in the grass area until the bigger stars take the stage. I’d imagine by 3pm the fans will start filling in their seats for David’s show. If not right when the show begins they’ll definitely sit down when they recognize a couple of his latest big hits.
I’m pretty excited to see David live. I can still remember the first time I heard him on the radio. It was back during the summer of 2002. I had just finished by Junior year of high school. I was working at a country club cleaning clubs and parking golf carts. I also drove the cart that picked up the range balls. It wasn’t a bad gig and it gave me a chance to mingle with a few of the members once in a while.
Anyway, it was this summer when I first heard David Nail on the radio. The song was Memphis and it had a unique sound. It was the story of a young couple finding weekend love in the city of Memphis and then going their separate ways. It was a good song and deserved more attention than reaching only the top 60 on the country singles charts.
Memphis by David Nail
That may have been the only time I heard the song on radio. It was played during one of those hit or miss shows on the local radio show and it didn’t hit with listeners. After that David was released from the label in what I think was restructuring. I figured we’d never hear from him again.
Flash forward six years and much to my surprise David was back on CMT with the video for his song I’m About To Come Alive. It was a good song, but I wasn’t a huge fan. It was good to see David back after such a long time. It has to be unheard for an artist to be pushed aside from what could be their only shot at stardom and come back again with a second chance.
After the comeback David found his first hit with Red Light. The song shot into the top ten on the charts. Another top twenty hit followed and David was a legit country star.
And now he’s heading to Country Jam to entertain us all.
For David’s show we can all expect to hear David’s hits:
Now, I think it’d be cool if he played Memphis, but that’s probably wishful thinking.
Beyond the hits we’ll probably get a good dose of David’s album cuts. His first album will probably be played in full and there are plenty of good songs.
This Time Around is a funky kind of track. It’s uptempo and could get the crowd going a bit on a Saturday afternoon. It’s the perfect kind of pop-country song fans seem to really like. It’s got a funky groove with a catchy hook that will have you singing along even if it’s the first time you hear the track.
Mississippi was a track that got some press for David when the album was new. Missouri also got some press as one of the better tracks on the album. Both songs are soulful and showcase the deep passion David brings to country music. He’s not the traditional type of country artist, but I like the music he makes. It’s unique, interesting, and keeps your attention.
David has new music out this summer.
The first single from his next album is at radio right now. Let It Rain has been a hit since it was first released earlier this year. The song is already in the top 40 at country radio and by July it could be in the top ten on its way to perhaps even number one.
The first time I heard the new track I thought it was great. It’s about cheating. David plays the character that has just cheated on the love of his life. He’s sitting around thinking about what he has just done. He feels awful and knows his world is about to change. He knows he deserves all the rain pouring down on him.
I’m also hoping to hear a bunch of new material off David’s next album. Hopefully the album will be on the shelves around the time of Country Jam or shortly after.
While artists sometimes struggle with the turnaround time on their sophomore albums, David seems like the kind of artist that will put out something special the second time around. He’s still finding his niche in country music. He doesn’t fit the mold of a traditional country singer so he has to find what fans will like from him.
After a few hits I think he’s discovering what his fans are liking.
We should expect more good things from David’s next album.
Something I like about live performances is when artists perform covers.
I’m not quite sure what David will bring to the table for covers. One I could find was a cover of Garth’s Much Too Young. David’s version is good. He has a great voice and his pop-soul sound gives something unique to the cowboy classic.
Another song I absolutely love is Don Henley’s Boys of Summer. And it looks like David may perform this one as well. Awesome. A great rock track with a cool guitar riff and plenty of soul in the vocals from David.
It seems David is also a Tom Petty fan. That should be pretty cool if he brings it to Country Jam.
And what kind of soul show would it be without a little Let’s Get It On.
I’m excited about David’s show and his future in country music.
He is so unique from any other artists right now. There is a soul in David’s vocals. Nobody else is doing anything like it right now and it’s really something I think could take off for him. I’d say perhaps even a five to ten year career for David would be something great for country fans.
Hopefully the new album comes out later this summer and we get a new collection of great tracks. Beyond that I’d expect more singles heading into award season where David should continue being a contender.
Country Jam fans should expect a great show from David Nail this summer.
It’s going to be a Saturday afternoon so even if you’re tired be sure to make it out there for David’s show. You’ll hear some songs from the radio and probably a few great covers.
It’s going to be a great show and the pavilion should be full of country fans loving some great soul-country.
Are you looking forward to David Nail at Country Jam?
