It’s official. I’m a fan of country rap.
Ok so maybe Jason Aldean‘s version of Dirt Road Anthem isn’t really a full step into country rap, but it’s close enough for me and I really love the song right now. This kind of song is so unique these days in country music and for a guy of country superstar status like Jason to record it is quite the statement. He’s making the music he likes and taking country in his own direction.
Dirt Road Anthem was written by two rising country artists – Brantley Gilbert and Colt Ford. Brantley just saw his song My Kinda Party reach #2 on the country charts last year as Jason Aldean took it up the charts. I love that song and I really hope to see Brantley get some recognition as a singer. Colt Ford has been having some pretty impressive results himself. He’s a country rapper I guess you could say. His albums have been selling well and his videos are entertaining as well.
Both Colt and Brantley have recorded and released their own versions of Dirt Road Anthem. I like the versions Brantley and Colt did for their albums. It’s a great duet.
I have to say though…Jason Aldean really captures a unique emotion with his version. When Jason sings the song I can picture myself back in those high school days parked out on the road just outside of town with the guys. We really wouldn’t do much except sit there and hang out…just chilling.
Beyond the coolness of the song’s small town lyrics and groovy melody I love the fact that it mentions swervin’ like George Jones. This is of course reference to George’s drinking days when he got pulled over for driving while intoxicated and had it all filmed.
Dirt Road Anthem is a song worthy of repeating over and over right now. I love it. This is the kind of song that gets talked about and becomes a multiple week chart topper.
