During the workday I like to turn on Prime Country on SiriusXM and listen to the classics of the ’80s and ’90s. One of the biggest stars of the era was Kathy Mattea. She had an incredible run of hit albums and hit singles through that timeframe. We’re talking about a run of six straight gold records with a platinum one in there to boot.
Kathy is still out there making great music with meaning today. Here is one of her latest videos that touches on life the way it is out there in the Southeast. Check it out.
Hello, My Name Is Coal – Kathy Mattea
These songs are always kind of weird. You have the idea that coal can be a living thing. It’s personification and it’s done really well in this song. The reason it does well is because coal is such a big part of the way people live in places like West Virginia. It’s a misunderstood way of life around the world and we only seem to hear about it when tragedy strikes.
Kathy Mattea…I think…was raised in the world of coal and that’s why this song (and her last album from 2008) have so much meaning and depth. She’s singing about her life and the things she knows. It’s always interesting when artists get personal with their songs and I think that’s what Kathy is doing on this record. It’s a great song that’s catchy, but it has that deeper meaning when you dig into the lyrics.
Great song from a great country artist. It’s amazing to see her still doing so well in 2013. It’s almost like it’s 1990 again.
