Ernest Hemingway seems to have had an impact on Kenny Chesney.
The author that defined American literature in the 20th century in many ways is still reaching people today and influencing their work. Songwriters, authors, and reading enthusiasts seem to find something inspiring and meaningful in the novels and stories by the great writer.
On Chesney’s latest album his title track sounds like a classic Kenny song – island feel, simple lyrics, and self reflection. HHemingway’s Whiskey seems to be about a guy reflecting on his life a bit over a glass of whiskey. The narrator also thinks of Hemingway and how the writer impacted the world of writing. The lyrics of Hemingway’s Whiskey are simple just as the man’s stories were. The character in the song is also common and authentic just as most of Hemingway’s characters were.
Ernest Hemingway lived an adventure filled life. He had a love for the coastal climate in Florida and Cuba. He was the typical man’s man with a simple routine that saw him working from early morning until midday only to leave the rest of the day for enjoyment and adventure. He went on many trips throughout the world including a trip to Africa that left him injured in a plane crash.
With Hemingway’s Whiskey it almost seems as if Chesney is comparing himself to the great writer in a way. Of course I don’t think Kenny thinks he compares in every way, but the adventure lifestyle seems to fit. Kenny has also made no bones about his love for the coast and the islands.
This song makes you think. It’s enjoyable and puts you in the mood for self reflection.
Check it out.
