For new artists it seems the most difficult thing is the follow up single.
Lee Brice had a big hit with Love Like Crazy. He wasn’t able to follow it up right away, but his last single A Woman Like You became his first number one. Now, Hard To Love looks to follow that song right back to the top. And you know what? I think he’s done it.
Hard To Love – Lee Brice
A Woman Like You was a song I really fell in love with. I immediately got the meaning and could relate to the track. It was a great song and it never surprised me that it became a huge hit. It did surprise me that it reached #1 on the chart, but it was a great song from the first listen.
This song, Hard To Love, is another great song. The meaning of the song is pretty straight forward. The guy in the song is simply telling the girl that he’s falling in love with that he’s hard to love. He’s a little rough around the edges. He’s trying to give her fair warning before she gets too involved. There will be tough times ahead because he’s not the perfect man. It’s something we all day, men and women, when we’re right on the edge of falling deeper into a relationship. It’s a gut check before we really commit ourselves to someone.
It’s a great story actually. It’s another one of those things Lee has been able to find that most people understand, but haven’t heard much before in country music. I know there have been songs about this topic, but this song feels completely new. And that’s not easy to accomplish, but Lee has found a gem with Hard To Love.
Even more than the lyrics and the story, I love the melody. This song is probably best described as being somewhere in between adult contemporary and country. I think that’s Ok. People will love this melody. It kind of steps along in the beginning until the chorus hits. This chorus is what makes the song for me. I was immediately singing along the very first time I heard it. That’s the sign of a melody that will really make a song a hit. If you’re singing along the first time you hear it then you know the song is a bit hit.
Hard To Love is going to be another hit for Lee Brice. After some big hits and some misses I think he might stumble on some great consistency here.
