Alison Krauss has a new album coming out this year. That’s pretty exciting. Alison has had one of the coolest careers in music. She’s had a home in bluegrass and country, but she’s really been able to gross boundaries in music. I think that anytime an artist does that it’s pretty cool. Break the rules.
This time Alison is releasing a collection of cover songs. I knew a couple songs on the album. I thought I recognized this first single, but I had to look up the details…
Losing You – Alison Krauss
This one was a Brenda Lee hit back in the sixties. It definitely has that feel. Just a classic lyric and sound. Alison seems to do a really good job of paying tribute to the original while also making this her own. There’s an updated sound to it and with Alison you’re always going to get the feeling that it’s her song. She just has such a distinct style and sound.
It’s a sad song. It’s a simple song about losing love or losing someone. I think the song is vague enough to leave room for interpretation. But you could see that maybe the narrator has lost someone that they loved who maybe didn’t love them back in the same way. The other person found someone else and this relationship just didn’t work out.
Alison does a really wonderful job on this one. I don’t know if it will have life on country radio, but that really hasn’t mattered much for Alison’s career. Her fans always find and love her music. Including me.
