Talent and a platform.
In today’s world the former is rare, but the latter is becoming more easy. In a small town of only 1,000 people and maybe 5,000 including pets and farm animals there is a young woman looking to make it big in the music world.
The other day I came across an article about Madilyn Bailey in a great local paper Volume One. It turns out Madilyn has been building a huge audience on YouTube over the past several months – over 40,000 people subscribe to her channel and her videos have received over 2 million views.
Those kind of numbers make you stop and dig a little deeper.
Shortly after reading the article in the print edition of Volume One I went to Madilyn’s YouTube page and started viewing her videos. I was amazed at how good she sounded. It doesn’t appear like she has access to the best recording equipment. With only a camera, a guitar, and her voice “Maddy” as she’s known by her friends belts out current pop hits while sitting in front of her camera from the stairs or on the couch in her house.
Madilyn Bailey Music
Maddy’s most watched video is her rendition of Eminem’s I’m Not Afraid. Her version is nothing like you’d expect. The stripped down acoustic version of the popular rap song is difficult to explain. It’s shocking how she’s able to make the song her own. It’s brilliant. This is talent stripped down at its rawest. Madilyn Bailey is talented. This particular video has nearly 500,000 views in just over six months. Quite impressive for a cover song. There are always the videos that are funny and get people sharing and watching, but for a girl to get there on her singing talent is something more than chance video stardom.
Looking through Madilyn’s list of covers it seems she is drawn to the latest pop songs. In the Volume One article (worth reading) Madilyn states that she does the popular cover songs because it gets her attention. That’s smart. Don’t think she doesn’t write and record her own music though. Madilyn’s own music is quite good. Check out I Won’t Say Anything.
A Country Career
It’s hard to tell if Madilyn has an interest in country music.
Looking through her collection of videos I noticed a cover of Sooner or Later originally recorded by Michelle Branch. Michelle had a hit with the song in 2009. Madilyn released her version this past September.
Sooner or Later (Cover) – Madilyn Bailey
In the past Michelle has had country hits as part of The Wreckers and her solo music has been played a bit on country radio and on CMT and GAC.
There seems to be – at least to my amateur ear – a bit of country influence in Madilyn’s voice. Wisconsin has quite a few country fans and country radio is big here.
Country and pop has been blended over the years and even today the current popular tunes on country radio have pop sounds. The immensely popular Taylor Swift is probably the biggest example of pop-country going mainstream today. The sound doesn’t appeal to the country traditionalists, but it sure appeals to a large audience of both country and pop fans.
Wherever Madilyn ends up with her career – country or pop – there is no doubt she has the talent to warrant success.
With over 2 million views of her videos on YouTube and over 40,000 subscribers to her channel there is already an audience built-in for her once she starts selling merchandise and tickets to live shows.
Today’s Internet world allows even those from the small towns in the corners of the world to reach a wide audience.
Madilyn has the talent and now the platform. Expect to see her much more in the future.
