Matt Garyis new on the country scene.
Gary is fighting an uphill battle in the country world. He’s trying to start a career with his own independent label. Radio stations are usually dismissive of any artist that doesn’t come with the big brand marketing backing. This means the singles released by independent acts have to be top of the line and worth talking about.
The latest single from Matt Gary is the catchy I’m Just Sayin’and fans are just saying it could be a breakout single in 2011. The song is about a guy looking at a girl’s relationship with another guy. He sees her fighting and struggling with the guy she’s with. He knows there is better for her out there besides this guy. It’s hard to tell if the narrator wants to be the new guy or if he’s simply a friend or friendly observer.
Whatever the motivation is behind the advice there is emphasis put on the phrase I’m Just Sayin’ as a way to say it’s just what I see, but I don’t want to tell you how to run your life.
Using common phrases like this in song is tricky. Artists and songwriters don’t want to be cliche, but they want their song phrases to sound familiar and make sense to listeners. Gary borders on the edge of this and I think the melody makes up for any cliche in the song. The chorus is especially upbeat and infectious.
Matt Gary is an interesting story. I’m always rooting for artists that kick the record label route and look to get hit songs while building buzz for their live shows. I’ll be rooting for Matt Gary and I’m liking his latest song.
