I’m a big believer that country stars don’t have to come from a specific place.
It seems like some believe you have to come from the southern USA to have real country chops. Being from Wisconsin, I hope that isn’t true. Brantley Gilbert sang about it in Country Must Be Country Wide. Let’s take that idea a step further and say that country must be world wide.
I introduce to you – The McClymonts.
I Could Be Your Cowboy – The McClymonts
The McClymonts are from Australia. These three women have one of the most interesting sounds I’ve heard in country music. They have something in their harmonies that doesn’t sound like the other country music out there. They don’t sound like other country groups. It has to be the Aussie influence. You hear it with Keith Urban and some other great artists from Australia.
The song – I Could Be Your Cowboy – is classic country. It’s about a woman that’s speaking to her guy. She’s saying she can be anything for him, even his cowboy, but that would mean leaving him. Later in the song you start to wonder if it was actually the guy that was the original one to run away from things in this relationship.
More than the lyrics, which are great, I think the song’s melody is what makes it so interesting. The groove is kind of laid back and sorrowful. You get a sense that something is wrong and if you’re in that kind of mood you can really feel the song and what it’s about. Heck, each time I listen to this song it kind of puts me in that mood even when I’m not.
That’s what the good country songs do.
The McClymonts are the real deal. They’ve had success in Australia and it seems like they should be destined for success in the US. Keith Urban has been the real success story from down under. Almost 15 years after originally striking it big as a country star he’s still one of the biggest country stars in the world. It’s amazing there haven’t been more Aussies to make it big in the US because there are some really good acts including The McClymonts.
Come on country world. Let’s welcome this band to the mainstream.
