Jennifer Nettles had a highly anticipated album that came out last year. The first single reached #37 on the country singles charts. It’s not the same heights that Sugarland’s singles regularly achieved, but it showed a progression for the talented Nettles.
It has to be hard for artists to try solo projects after belonging to a group. They have a huge fan base that expects one kind of sound and if they don’t deliver those fans don’t know how to receive it. So the artist ends up needing to win over new fans.
With this second song I think Nettles is going to earn those new fans. It’s a really good song that showcases her powerful voice.
Me Without You – Jennifer Nettles
The best part of this song is the subtle music in the background. The production really puts Nettles front and center. We’re listening to an acoustic performance here, but it’s a really good acoustic performance. And Nettles shows what a powerhouse she is live and up close.
I have to admit that I wasn’t really sure what this song was about the first few times listening to it. I had to go and examine the lyrics because I had a hunch that I knew what it was about, but had to make sure.
Even after reading the lyrics I’m still unsure. The song is about someone that leaves a person and discovers how strong they are without that person. It’s almost as if that person was holding them back.
Hopefully this is something of a fictional story about a woman that leaves a man. But people are going to wonder if it’s about Jennifer leaving Sugarland.
We’ll have to see if she addresses the question.
