CMT Edge delivers once again with an intriguing performance by Justin Townes Earle. I had no idea who this guy was until I stumbled on the video, but the names Townes and Earle certainly bring about the images of two interesting, if not great, country artists.
It turns out that Justin is the son of Steve Earle and he was given the name Townes after Earle’s influence Townes van Zandt. With that kind of pressure you would think it would drive Justin crazy to be in the same business, but here he is up on stage giving a great performance.
Memphis In The Rain – Justin Townes Earle
There is something about an artist up on stage alone with a guitar that is appealing. The emotion is so raw and the pressure to perform well is there. You’re the main focus and in this setting Justin Townes Earle really pulls it off well.
From what I can tell the song is a simple story song about traveling through a city and traveling through life. From what I can gather it’s just about getting by and doing the best you can with what life gives you.
The melody is cool. The guitar playing is interesting and for me it really works. I don’t know if Justin considers himself a country artist, but to me he sounds like a traditional country singer-songwriter all the way.

It’s great to check out CMT Edge every week. They always have great artists on there that I’ve never heard of including Justin Townes Earle. Hell, the guy has been around for years and has released four albums. We should know about him by now.
