The theme will sound familiar, but the sound is fresh and new. I maybe sense a little bit of Texas country in there, but I can’t say for sure if that’s the case.
I believe this is the first time we’ve looked at Mike Ryan on CML. The first impression is a good one. It seems like he’s rooted in traditional country music while looking for his own sound. I can definitely respect that.
Here is his new song.
New Hometown – Mike Ryan
So let’s get it out in the open – the theme of the song is very similar to Eric Church’s My Hometown. That song is about a breakup and a guy that wants his hometown back after the breakup. Everywhere he goes people look at him differently because of what happens.
In this case with Mike Ryan, the theme is similar, but the song is different. I think it’s done very well. The guy is looking at his situation, which seems to be a recent breakup. He’s not blaming anyone for anything. He’s simply feeling the emotion of the breakup and he’s thinking that he has to get a new hometown.
But that’s obviously not an easy thing to do. He’s thinking back on all the history and the memories in his current hometown. His family has been from here. He’s put so much into this hometown, but it’s looking like the only way to move on is to start over from scratch.
A very good song with some real emotional teeth. I like it.
