It’s been about a year since Nick 13 released his first solo record. Back at that time I reviewed the album and thought it was one of the most interesting albums of the year. One of the songs on that record has now been released as s single and a video accompanies the song. Check it out and see what you think.
Carry My Body Down – Nick 13
Last year I thought this sounded like an old Marty Robbins songs. Today I’m not so sure if that’s how I feel. It’s definitely not something you’ll hear on the country radio stations these days. It’s a throwback so far back in country history that there is really nothing like this in the last 20 or even 30 years. It’s really cool to hear music like this in modern country music.
The song seems to be about life. The narrator is wondering what his place is from what I can tell. It’s kind of difficult to understand the words. The narrator is looking at his current life and wondering where he’s going. He’s looking at the past and realizes that he’s come quite a long way to get here, but he’s not sure how much longer he has left. I’m starting to wonder if the song is about suicide or if it’s simply about dying and how death can come in a variety of different ways. I could be way off base with that interpretation so be sure to share your own thoughts in the comments.
What stands out most to me about this song is the voice of Nick 13. I have to digress, though, here and state that he has a weird stage name. I’m not sure on the background of it, but it’s certainly interesting.
But back to his voice. I love it. I could listen to this music all day. It’s soothing, but eery. It’s interesting and completely different from any artist you’ll hear today in any kind of music.
Yet even though Nick 13 is different there is still the melodic quality in the music. I feel that melody is always important to the success of a song. You need to have something that people can connect with and a good melody does that no matter what the song is about.
