My new obsession these days is CMT Edge. I can’t get enough of the music they put up there. If you haven’t already you need to check it out because there are lots of great artists right on the edge of the country mainstream. Get it?
Anyway, here is the latest entry over there from Corb Lund and Hayes Carll. I’ll admit I have no idea who these guys are but they have a really great song on there and I think you’re going to like it.
Bible On The Dash – Corb Lund & Hayes Carll
These two guys are traveling around with a bible on the dash of their car. They’re breaking the laws and looking to get places fast and the plan is to dodge the police by showing off the good book. The plan seems to work and you’re taken on a story through the life of these two guys.
What a throwback to the old story songs. Here you have two Americana singers right on the edge of country music singing about busting their way through life and doing it just as the locals would down in the South. I think it’s a great hook for a song and the lyrics just seem to blend together perfectly.
The song reminds me of something Merle Haggard or Roger Miller would do back in the old days. You’d have a story to tell and it would end up making a great song. The stories were almost entirely fiction, but it doesn’t matter. Some of the best stories out there are embellished.
