I’ve got a story for you.
Back in early high school or late middle school I used to wake up early before taking the bus to school and watch CMT. It was the usual routine. I’ve always gotten up early and would sit and watch some sports and some CMT for about a half hour before making my way to school.
This was back when CMT had a really sweet ’90s logo with red, yellow and blue. There were lots of sweaters worn by the hosts and things were fun and light. Songs by Chely Wright were big. I think it was right before Rascal Flatts came out. Shania was big. Tim McGraw was huge. Faith was huge. Country was kind of leaning a little bit pop, but it was alright.
There was one song I heard on the radio a few times and I also saw the video on CMT a couple times. It wasn’t a major hit, but the melody captured my attention.
The song was A Matter Of Time. It took me a while to figure out that the artist was Jason Sellers. One day when I was at the store I saw a copy of the full album on the CD rack and paid the $12 or whatever it was back then for the album. There was only one copy in the store and I’m not sure if anyone else I knew owned the record, but I still play it to this day on my computer.
I learned that this was Jason Sellers second album and that it would also be the last (up to this point) that he’s put out. However, you’ve probably heard Sellers’ influence on country music the last decade. He’s written and co-written scores of songs for other artists. We’re talking big hits like Some People Change, Don’t You Wanna Stay and Sunny And 75. Great songs.
Another interesting twist is that is Sellers was married to Lee Ann Womack back in the early ’90s. I remember hearing Lee Ann talk about it back in the early ’00s on one of those Behind The Music-type shows. She’s another one of my favorite artists. I remember Alan Jackson always complimenting her traditional style.
Anyways, Jason and Lee Ann had a daughter during their marriage and now it appears that their daughter, Aubrie, is a rising country star herself.
One of my current favorite artists is David Nail and his latest album includes a song that apparently features Aubrie pretty heavily. The song is Brand New Day and it’s really good. I don’t know if it’ll be a single, but it’s sure to get Aubrie some big time attention and maybe in the near future we’ll get some debut music from her.
It’s cool to see how generational country music can be. And it’s weird thinking back on all those little connections throughout your life. Music kind of works that way sometimes. Certain songs, albums and artists kind of capture your attention and you later realize that they’re intertwined in a way.
Pretty cool, but anyway, here are the videos of some of my favorite songs from these three wonderful artists.
