It’s been a Toby Keith week here on Country Music Life.
Thanks for sticking around.
We started out on Wednesday looking at an album track from one of Toby’s albums that never made the cut as a single. Then we looked at one of Toby’s biggest hits from a few years back.
And today we’re looking at his latest single.
Rum Is The Reason – Toby Keith
It’s definitely got that Jimmy Buffett vibe from the beginning. But you could gather that it probably would have that from the title.
There is a lot to like about this song. To me, it’s really classic Toby Keith in more than one way.
First, the song makes you smile a bit. Toby has always had a little underlying sense of humor about him. His fans have loved that.
Second, it’s unique and clever. The Scotty Emerick and Toby Keith writing partnership was incredibly successful in the ’00s. The two haven’t written quite as often the last few years. I’m not sure if this song is from the vault or if it’s a new one, but the partnership definitely came through again on this one.
Third, Toby is perfect in storyteller mode on this song. The song and lyrics take centerstage. Toby can kind of sit back and do the storytelling and that’s perfect for fans looking for something cool and fresh.
The song is about rum and the effects it has on people both today in the past. The hook is that rum is the reason pirates never ruled the world and maybe it’s a little reason why many of us couldn’t take over the world today.
I hope this one does well. You never know with Toby these days if radio will play his songs. I think they should play this one.
