Looking back now it’s kind of crazy to see that the short-lived show Nashville Star is still having an impact on country music.
Don’t remember the show?
The first season of the singing competition show was in 2003. Miranda Lambert came in third. In 2006, Chris Young was the winner.
And some guy named Blake Shelton was a judge in 2007 long before he ever took the job at The Voice.
It was a great show with lots of great music including the first season winner, Buddy Jewell. Remember him? He was a great guy with a great voice and had a couple big hits along with a hit album.
He’s still out there releasing new songs including this one that was quietly released just last fall.
Softly Down – Buddy Jewell
Buddy was always kind of old school with his music. I believe he was working in Nashville for several years as a demo singer. Songwriters would come to him when they wanted to have a recording to pitch to male artists.
Buddy has a voice that sounded familiar. He sounded like he belonged on country radio, but he also sounded just different enough from other male artists at the time.
This new one has some meaning behind it. There appears to be a few key points in the lyrics, but it’s vague enough so that you can kind of fit in your own meaning. It’s a good song.
I don’t know if Buddy will ever return to country radio, but we can still enjoy his music in other ways.
