It’s been about a year since I first heard about Stealing Angels.
Last summer I had the chance to see the trio of country newcomers perform at Country Jam in Eau Claire. The three women had an interesting story about their bloodlines. They also had the music that made you pay attention.
Now it’s 2011 and the girls have two singles that have made it on the country charts. They’re prepping to release their first complete album and after a few full listens I have to say it’s a great debut.
Here were my thoughts track by track…
Stealing Angels Debut Album Review
Overall the album has a great sound. It’s country with plenty of modern sounds. These girls have a great chemistry. It’s easy to see how they can put up with being the opening act at 3pm on a hot Wisconsin summer afternoon and still be together a year later. They love what they do and the passion comes through in each of their songs.
This was the girls’ second single earlier in 2011. The song came out and I had the chance to review it here on CML. At the time I thought the song had the makings of a hit. I honestly thought it could gain some attention. It’s been a few months. The song didn’t make it huge on the charts. I still think it’s a great track. The song is a ballad about the nature of young women and the troubles they have with love. It’s still a little confusing to me on the exact meaning of the song, but that’s probably how it’s meant to be. Share your thoughts in the comments.
He Better Be Dead
This was the girls’ first single release last year. It was the track they were really excited about last summer. It’s a rocking number about a girl that hasn’t had a call from her man in a few days. And we all should know how that scenario ends. Guys…why don’t we do the right things when we have the chance? Why do we always have to make our girls nervous? This track is kicks butt. It shows the true emotion of a woman ready to let her man have it. It’s great. Guys…give your girl a call.
This afternoon I was driving back from a weekend trip. I heard SheDaisy on the radio. It took me back about ten years when those girls first came out on the radio. Listening to Little Cloud I’m reminded of SheDaisy a little bit. There is a little twang in the voices of Stealing Angels. It’s country with just a little pop mixed in. This song is catchy. It’s light hearted. It’s got something fun about it that makes you feel good and want to go out and enjoy the day. It’s simple, but sometimes simple is what we need.
If I Had A Ladder
This track starts off on the slow side. It actually has a feel like a country ballad from the ’90s. I like it. It reminds me of a mix of Pam Tillis and Patty Loveless. The vocals are strong. The song is about the struggle in a relationship between the lead female in the song and her man. The girls in the band seem to have their issues with men, but who among us hasn’t had issues with relationships? This is a strong song. The harmonies are unique. Something that can separate this band from the others in country music.
Girls Gotcha Back
The girls take turn on the lead with this song. It’s kinda neat. They all can sing the hell out of a country song. It’s a girl power song. One of them broke it off with a guy that wasn’t right for her. She’s heading out on the town with her girls now. It’s the same with guys and girls. Your friends will always have your back. Relationships will come and go for a while. Keep your friends close and lean on them for a good time when you need to get away for a night.
Lord Don’t Give Up On Me
Things slow way down on this one. It’s a pretty song. The girl is asking for a little forgiveness it seems. She’s admitting to her sins, but knows she might have a chance at some redemption. In life we all make mistakes. We all do things we wish we could take back. We have to live our lives the best we can and make the best decisions we can. We’re all just hoping things work out in the end for us.
If I Was So Bad
These gals in Stealing Angels have certainly had their issues with men. With this track they’re wondering why one of their exes wants one of them back again. He’s the one that left. He’s the one that said she was no good for him. He’s the one that now wants her back. What is she supposed to do? Take him back and get hurt again? In the end the girl decides it’s not worth it. Move on and take your chances with the next guy. This one is a real loser.
This song is probably my favorite on the album. The sentiment is great. I wish sometimes I could just take my girl and hit the road. Leave everything behind – work, worries, and problems. Just hit the road and be with the one I love the most. Head out West and just get lost somewhere over the horizon. Find a new life somewhere people don’t know us. The light of the moon can be our guide in the middle of the night. That’s what this track is about. the song is great and it sounds really good. The harmonies of Stealing Angels really come through. It’s great.
I Wanna Be Married
Now this one really sounds like ’90s country. It’s rocking and really twanging. I like it. The girls are struggling with the decision of being married or staying single. She wants to stay single on her own and not disappoint all her potential other guys out there. She does want to settle down with her one true love, though and that’s the difficult decision. It’s a fun song. A potential single? I do have to say, girls, this is the kind of thing that drives us guys crazy.
If I Smoked
It’s another cheating song. The guys these girls have been with must be real jerks. They’ve inspired some good country songs, though. This is some Miranda Lambert country music right here. I like it. The girls sing about all the things that would happen if they drank, smoked, chewed, gambled, and cheated. In the end it’s just frustration over being cheated on. It’s a tough deal. This is how you feel. Great song.
You’ll Be Back
There is a really pretty chorus on this song. The lead singer sings about a guy that’s gone. The girls in the background sing back to her. It’s sweet even though the sentiment of the song is about a guy that’s gone. The girl is in a bit of denial. She thinks the guy is coming back eventually. Even though he said he’s gone for good she’s right here waiting for him. She isn’t moving on. Not yet.
Oh Crazy Me
This song is almost like Norah Jones or something. It’s a big change of pace. On the first album there is always a bit of play with the song strategy. Artists are trying to find their voice. This song is really neat. The piano is heavier. The voices are sultry and soulful. These girls can really do anything. I really like this song. It makes me want to grab a cocktail and lay back in the plush lounge sofa tonight.
Lightning In A Bottle
We’re back to heavy country to close things out. I like how the girls chose to finish out the album. We’re back to rocking country. The speed is turned way up and so is the attitude. It shows off how the girls can kick some ass. I really like this one. It’s the perfect finishing track to a really strong debut album.
