This is one of my all-time favorite country songs. I don’t think that John Conlee gets the recognition he deserves as one of country’s great singers and performers. If you listen to any classic country radio station for more than a couple hours you’re bound to hear one of John’s songs.
The other day I went to check out some potential hunting land to lease this coming deer season and as I was driving through the backroads of Wisconsin the song Backside Of Thirty came on the radio.
This wasn’t the first time I’d heard the song. In fact, it’s been one of my favorites for a long time. I bought the collection of John Conlee’s greatest hits many years ago. I’m the only one I know in my age bracket that listens to this kind of country music, but I love it.
And the song has even more meaning now as I near by 30th birthday later this year.
The song is about a guy who’s coming on the later years in his 30s. He’s on the way out of that decade and he’s looking back on how he thought things would turn out and how they’ve really turned out.
On his 30th birthday he had a wive, a song and a good job. Now all those things are gone. He has some kind of job now, but it’s nothing special and he’s mostly using the cash to pay for drinking.
It’s a sad country song, but I’m sure it’s an all too real situation for many folks out there.
I hope you enjoy it on this Throwback Thursday.
