The Toby Keith & Scotty Emerick writing partnership seemed to begin with a track on How Do You Like Me Now?!, which came out in 1999.
But the partnership really started taking a turn in 2001 with the release of the album Pull My Chain. From there Toby wrote with Scotty on almost an exclusive basis for about five or so years. And they had one of the most successful runs on the charts of any writing duo in country history.
I think it really began with the hit single I’m Just Talkin’ About Tonight in 2001.
It was the leadoff single from Pull My Chain. Toby was riding the success of How Do You Like Me Now?! That album marked a change in Toby’s career as he switched labels and found even more success than he’d had at his previous label where he had become a pretty big star.
And things continued with Pull My Chain starting with I’m Just Talkin’ About Tonight. The song maybe even seems now a little bit of a precursor to the Bro Country thing that’s going on right now.
The song was fun, upbeat and catchy. It might be viewed on the surface as just a hookup song, but I think there is something a little deeper in the song. It’s about two people that have been through it all with love in their lives. They’ve tried and tried to find the one, but it hasn’t worked out for either.
Now they’re in maybe just having a good time with each other and let it be at that for now. They don’t want to think too far ahead because that has gotten them in trouble in the past.
But they’ll have to be careful if one starts falling in love.
This song was big. It’s nearly 15 years old now, but I think it holds up well and it’s a great look back on what Toby & Scotty accomplished.
Do you remember this one?
