I’m ashamed that I haven’t added a Vern Gosdin song here on the Throwback Thursday edition of new music at Country Music Life. The man racked up hits on the country charts for well over 10 years in the ’70s, ’80s and even into the ’90s. When someone has a career that long you need to mention their impact.
I thought about maybe mentioning the biggest hits that Vern had like Set ‘Em Up Joe, Chiseled In Stone, and I’m Still Crazy, but I actually wanted to focus on another one that I still hear fairly often on our local classic country station here where I live, Moose Country.
The song is That Just About Does It. This one was actually released right at the end of 1989 and became a regular on the radio in 1990. So Vern was really at a peak in his career, but it was also just about the end of his time on the mainstream country charts although he’s still all over the classic country radio stations.
Even in 1989 you have to think this song has a classic sound. I don’t know if you would ever hear a song like this on the radio today. And when I say a song like this I mean a song this good. The production is really focused on the lyrics and the story in the song. You get Vern’s great country vocal. You can feel the emotion in how he’s telling the story of heartbreak for these two people.
Vern’s songs are a gift to those that love country music. I still love listening to this song and his entire collection today. His catalog stands the test of time especially this 25-year old song.
