I’m going to do something a little different here on this Throwback Thursday. We’re looking at a song that certainly wouldn’t fit in a traditional definition of country music.
But there is a performance from just over 20 years ago that I’ve always thought was amazing in the emotion put into the song. It’s a traditional song performed by a rock band, but I think the feelings that come through in the music and especially the vocals are things that have been felt in country music for as long as it’s existed.
The song is Where Did You Sleep Last Night and it’s performed by Nirvana.
Have you seen this performance before?
In the beginning Kurt mentions that his favorite version of the song is Lead Belly. He was a folks and blues musician and his version of this song is very good.
But this version from Nirvana is really something. It’s haunting. It makes you feel uncomfortable, but for some reason you can’t stop watching this performance. You see the rage and incredible passion in the performance.
The end of the performance is really where things go a little crazy. That’s what makes you want to play the video again. For that last note it looks like Kurt has to go someplace really dark for himself personally and from within he’s able to pull out that note on the last shiver and night through.
It’s really incredible.
Thanks for letting me share it here on the blog. Please let me know what you think.
