Toby Keith is back on the singles charts this week with his new song, Drunk Americans. The song has the type of sound that has made Toby one of the most successful artists for the past two decades.
Toby hasn’t reached the top of the charts for the last couple albums, but I think that’s all about to change. This game is all about having bit hits whether it’s on radio, online or on a commercial, TV show or movie. I think Drunk Americans has the potential to right up there with the biggest hit’s of Toby’s career.
It’s interesting to look back on Toby’s career. You realize that this isn’t the first time he’s had to fight for his place in country music. He struggled to get his foot in the door in Nashville despite having a really solid gig going as an independent artist. He also had to fight to be heard within his own label. They were kind of shunning him despite the fact that he was one of the most consistent hit makers in the ’90s.
He eventually found his place on a new label and had a huge run in the ’00s. Then he went out on his own and continued to have hits. I’m glad that he’ll be back on the radio with the new song.
And in the meantime we can look back on one of his earliest hits. This is one of the songs Toby took to Nashville when he was getting turned down. It turned out to be a smash hit even though it’s kind of a sad song about a guy that wishes he didn’t know that his girl was cheating on him.
