Today we’re throwing it back on Thursday to one of my favorite artists. And he’s one I’ve been listening to more than a little bit of late.
We have this record store in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, called Revival Records. I’m not sure if it’s part of a national chain or what. The name seems too good to be a small town-only store, but it could be. It certainly has that kind of feel.
Anyway, I’ve gotten a few old records in there. My wife was actually the one that bought the turntable and now I’m the one with a handful of old records.
One of the records I bought was Steve Wariner Greatest Hits. It’s the hits records from his early days at MCA after he had left RCA where he had some success.
Steve’s career is really interesting. My first memory of him is the songs he did with Garth Brooks and Clint Black in the late ’90s. Steve had a career revival during that time. It was only later that I came to the game and realized that Steve had a really strong run of hits in the ’80s.
From 1985 through 1989 he had 8 number ones and a few more that didn’t quite reach the top of the charts. That’s really impressive yet casual country fans don’t often think of Steve when they think of the great. He had and has a different style, but it’s always been good and catchy.
The song that’s been standing out to me is You Can Dream Of Me. The song was released in late 1985 and went number one in early 1986. It’s just really catchy and unique. I’ve been listening to this one over and over.
It’s an interesting lyric. I think it’s about two people that were once together, but broke apart and are still apart. But they still dream of each other. Or at least the guy dreams of the girl from the past and he’s wishing that she still dreams of him as well.
It’s interesting and adds intrigue to a really good melody.
Great song and one of my favorites from a great country artist.
