It seems like few outside Nashville knew who Chris Stapleton was before the other night at the CMA Awards.
At the show, Chris took home some really big awards. He won New Artist and I figured even that was a surprise. Did he have a better year than Sam Hunt and Thomas Rhett?
Then Chris stunned even more winning Album Of The Year and Male Vocalist Of The Year. I don’t know if the same artist has won the new artist and vocalist awards in the same year while also winning the album for their first solo album.
Pretty crazy stuff. I’m not saying that Chris isn’t deserving. I think he’s great. It’s just a change of pace for the CMAs. Maybe they felt they needed to stir up some publicity.
Anyway, I looked back in the CML archives and we’ve covered Chris three times. The first was back in 2010 when Darius Rucker released Come Back Song, which was co-written with Chris. Then we covered a couple of Chris’s songs including the title track from his 2015 award-winning album, Traveller.
The other day on the show he performed a song with Justin Timberlake. It didn’t sound familiar at first, but once the lyrics kicked in I think most knew instantly what it was…
Tennessee Whiskey – Chris Stapleton
The song is a cover of a George Jones classic. George’s version came in 1983 and reached #2 on the chart in the fall of that year. And it became one of George’s classics. It’s catchy and something people have always liked.
Chris adds a little blues to the song. It’s different than George’s version, but I think it works out just fine.
I’m not sure if the label will put some push behind Chris’s version, but I think people would be attracted to it today just as they were over 30 years ago.
What do you think?
