I grew up on country music in the ’90s. I had a pretty broad range of favorites at the time. I loved the traditional stuff that George Strait, Alan Jackson and Mark Chesnutt were doing. Then even when things kind of shifted to more pop I still loved it.
You had Shania Twain, Faith Hill and then Rascal Flatts and more.
And kind of right in the middle was Ty Herndon. He had a handful of major hits during the mid and late ’90s. I specifically remember wearing out his Greatest Hits CD in my car when I was in high school.
Ty has been through a lot over the years. His career isn’t in the same place as it was back then. He’s more on the independent route these days, but I think he’s as popular as ever. And he’s making some really great music including this song from a brand new album.
That Kind Of Night – Ty Herndon
Ty always had one of great voices in country music. It has a full sound. It has a deep emotional quality that not every artist has. There is pain and experience in the voice and you can’t really train that.
On this song, Ty’s voice comes across as powerful as ever. He sounds really good.
Obviously this song has the production tuned up a bit to fit with modern tastes, but I’m fine with that. We’re not living in 1997 anymore. Time moves on and tastes change. I think Ty has found a good balance of staying true to the kind of artist he is while still offering something fresh for fans.
I really like this one.
