Visually The Civil Wars are intriguing.
You an’t help but think of Johnny Depp when you first see John Paul White. Once you get past that initial curiosity you start listening to the music, the vocals, and the melodies and it captures your full attention.
The Civil Wars have been around for just a couple years and recently their first full length album was released and received well by music lovers. Now the duo’s latest video is being exposed to the country audience.
Barton Hollow is the name of the song and it has a haunting, chilling feel to it. Things in the video get started off with almost an uneasy silence. All you hear are the footsteps of leather soles walking on a wooden foot bridge. Then come in the voices of too talented folk singers followed by the rhythmic strumming of an old style guitar.
Barton Hollow seems to be a song about temptation, wrong doing, and potential forgiveness. The character in the song seems to know they’ve done something that cannot be forgiven even by the most understanding of lords and fathers.
I’m really not sure what to compare The Civil Wars to. Little Big Town perhaps? The old school bluegrass artists? Maybe this new duo shouldn’t be compared to anybody.
I like Barton Hollow. The song and video captured my attention right away. If more people see this video and hear the song I’m sure they’ll be captivated as well.
