Tim McGraw Got Away

This is what Tim McGraw does best.

When Tim is singing songs that sound a little different he’s at his best. When he’s singing like he has something to prove he’s at his best.

Tim does this all with a track he recently released out to his fans.

The One That Got Away – Tim McGraw

It’s been an interesting period in Tim McGraw’s career.

Last year Tim turned in an album for Curb. Tim then hit the road in support of that album. The tour was a huge success. Tim played the new songs. Fans flocked to see him like they always do. There was one problem, though. There was no album for fans to purchase.

Tim’s label, Curb, didn’t want to let Tim go. The contract the two had signed was coming to and end. Tim reportedly turned in his album too soon and Curb was taking an angle to try to keep their biggest star.

Now, Tim is free to record on his own (although there could be some financial penalties) and Curb has finally prepared to release Emotional Traffic. Curb also released a single Better Than I Used To Be and it’s racing up the charts.

Curb has now released another track from the upcoming set just prior to the album’s release. The new track, The One That Got Away is interesting. The song is about looking at yourself and realizing that everybody wants you now that you’re a success. You were once turned down by everybody for not being good enough and now they all want a piece of you and your success. And they want it for selfish reasons.

It’s an interesting song given the things Tim has experienced in the last year and I think The One That Got Away is the perfect song for Curb to release right now.

Back in 1994-95, Tim and Curb released a song that was pretty controversial called Indian Outlaw. Tim was struggled for attention at the time and the song really brought the attention he needed. From there, Tim was able to show the country world that he was capable of having great songs and fans fell in love with him. His follow up to Indian Outlaw was Don’t Take The Girl, which became a huge number one hit.

I think Curb knows how to play the controversy game well. They understand that sometimes you need a little attention after some time out of  the spotlight to let people know you’re still around and relevant.

The One That Got Away  should become a hit with fans that have taken Tim’s side and I’m sure subsequent releases will get back to more traditional topics for country songs.

Tim has never shied away from songs that sound different and cover uncomfortable topics. He’s done it again with The One That Got Away and I think it’s great.
